Study of Alex Katz

Fine Art Degree Project, 2006

I spent my first years at Sheridan College where one of my Fine Arts projects was to find a renowned artist and create a piece of art inspired by their subject and style. Mr. Alex Katz enjoyed the female portrait and profile but with a more modern, simpler style of color blocking. He used this technique to define the human face, shadows, and highlights. This is my creation on a canvas pulled by yours truly. I used color-blocking to define this human face who is wearing an oversized playful hat using some of my mom's favorite colors. I'm obsessed with vintage hats and the beauty of the '40s and '50s. I want to create the feeling that is women was from that era. This was also the time Alex Katz was painting some of his first pieces.
